The sofa is the centre piece of any living room.More than just a seating option, the sofa captures the vibe of a room, maybe because it is simply one of the things that you first notice when you enter the room or because it can be one of the most comfortable things in the room.It is usually an anchor for all other objects and furniture in the room.

You may choose a complete sofa set or an L-shaped sofa with smaller sofas to complete the design of your living room. Choosing the right sofa for your living room, that fits in perfectly and complements the overall theme, is an important step in designing a room.It requires more than simply choosing your favourite colour and guesstimating the size, or just picking one that looks fine.

Like everything else, a sofa set also comes in a plethora of shapes and sizes, and just when you would think you know exactly what you want, you might find another design that speaks to you.

Use these tips to get a clear idea of what you want and what you need before you start the hunt for the right sofa.

  • Size
You need to decide exactly how much of the space you want your couch to fill. If you want to include other chairs, a coffee table, etc. a simple sofa, or an L-shape sofa is probably the best fit. Make sure you take exact measurements of the space before you begin looking.
  • Orientation
Organise your sofa set by analysing your lifestyle. For example, if you like to watch a lot of TV, direct the sofa in the TV’s direction; if you love hosting games, go fora circular orientation; if you plan to use it to relax in, surround the sofa with lots of pillows; and so on.
  • Shape
Once your sofa’s function has been decided, figure out a shape you like that will fulfil the purpose. A clean L-shape sofa is great for open areas that need separation and round shapes are perfect for smaller spaces. Ensure your sofa is not protruding beyond an existing wall or floating aimlessly in an open space and you should be fine.
  • Scale
Buying a large, multi-piece sofa set maximizes your comfort, but it will eat up a lot of your space if you live in a smaller apartment. It might be comfortable but may not be practical. The sofa should always be in scale with the rest of your décor, shouldn’t occupy the entire area, and shouldn’t be too big or too small for the space.
  • Material
You need to choose a practical and functional upholstery material, that doesn’t end up doing more harm than good. Suede sure looks good but can be a poor choice if you have pets or small children, leather on the other hand generally wears well with age and is easy to clean. You can also opt for an outdoor fabric that resists stains, water, and fading.
  • Colour
Solid bold colours or light shades with patterns are classic options that can be seen in almost every living room. Try to be creative with your imagination and figure out a unique combination that matches your walls, ornaments, curtains, or even coffee tables!

When choosing a sofa, you will also need to consider how you will be using it in accordance with the space you have available. Figuring out the particular, specific task you will be using your sofa for, like reading a book, hosting guests, lying down or binge watching, and being honest about it will help you buy the right sofa for your space.
